Precision Over Prescription: Apollo Hospitals Bets on Lysin Science to Combat Superbugs
Apollo Hospitals has announced a partnership with Precisio Biotix in developing and implementing lysin-based antimicrobials in India. This collaboration is expected to make a substantial contribution to the fight against the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in India. The partnership, held in Hyderabad, will concentrate on conducting translational research and clinical validation of lysin-based antimicrobials as well as the possible avenues of their implementation for the benefit of Apollo Hospitals' patients, with a focus on treating infections that have no currently available treatments.
Lysin-Based Antimicrobials: A New Approach
The use of lysins provides a novel and efficient alternative to existing classes of antimicrobials. They are precision antimicrobial proteins that are capable of rapid action and are highly selective in nature, destroying biofilms while not leading to increased antimicrobial resistance as is often seen with conventional antibiotics. Lysins are a novel type of antimicrobial proteins that can prove useful in treating high-burden infections and drug-resistant infections associated with chronic diseases and hospital-acquired conditions.
Apollo Hospitals' Vision for Precision Medicine
Speaking of the seriousness of this issue, Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., noted that "antimicrobial resistance is one of the most pressing and complex challenges in modern healthcare."
"Apollo's goal is to develop the approaches to precision medicine that exceed traditional treatment methods," she continued. "Our cooperation with Precisio Biotix is an example of a transition from traditional to more advanced biologically oriented therapies such as lysins that have potential in treating resistant infections while preserving the efficacy of other treatment methods."
Advancing Research and AMR Management
According to her, the project in question "is not only a scientific breakthrough but also a necessary step towards ensuring the future of patient care."
Under the terms of the collaboration, Apollo and Precisio Biotix intend to publish a white paper that will deal with the development of lysin-based treatment methods and the approaches to AMR management adjusted for the Indian healthcare environment.
